Chapter Eighteen

Mariah tried not to be jealous of the twins. They’d been bought at the same time as her, and they were both on some kind of fast-track towards being freepersons. Ezra had already been accepted into a college, and he’d start classes in the fall. Elijah had been sitting at a steering wheel and pedals, learning to drive in a video game, when Master had first taken her inside the night before.

She vaguely remembered that she’d known how to drive, but she had no idea who’d taught her. She also knew she’d aced the ACT test with a 33, though she didn’t remember taking it or studying for it. However, she had a new name and a new identity now, so that number no longer belonged to her. She’d have to take the test all over again under this identity before she could even consider registering, though it didn’t matter because college wasn’t an option for her.

But the twins weren’t under a life sentence. They hadn’t been branded, nor did they have the notch out of their ears. Master said it was because Brooke had made her purchase of them dependent upon them not being under a life sentence when they went on the auction block. She’d known about them since they’d been quite young, and had kept tabs on them until the Concilio was ready to sell them.

Master hadn’t known about Mariah until he saw her two days before the auction took place. He hadn’t been interested in a slave who could one day be free, not like Brooke.

But on this day, Master had brought her so she could swim in Dev and Genie’s lake, and she was enjoying the day, outside in the sunshine with Dev, Genie, Ezra, and Elijah. She could scent more cats in the vicinity and knew they were likely guards, though she didn’t know how anyone thought she might try to escape.

But Master was still dead to the world because it was only ten minutes after noon. She was outside under the heat of the sun, midday, and it was glorious.

She was also wearing a bathing suit, which felt odd. She stood on a rock and dove into the water, sliced her way across the small lake, swam halfway back, and rolled to her back to float with the cool of the water below her and the sun’s rays beating down from the clear blue sky, though she had her eyes closed by this point and no longer saw it.

“Until a few weeks ago,” Elijah told her when he floated close to her, “I hadn’t decided for sure whether I wanted my freedom or not. It’s a lot of responsibility, making decisions and managing yourself. If Ezra wasn’t so close to testing for it, and doing so well with the freedoms he’s been given already, I’m not sure I’d be brave enough for it.”

“Master takes care of me,” she told him. “Master is giving me a pleasant life. He’s educating me. A college degree is out of the question, but I’ll have as much knowledge as a college graduate.
